13th June 2020 Windsurfing: Bradfield Wind Direction: ENE Wind Stength: 6-12kts Surf / Sea State: flat Air Temperature: warm Sea Temperature: warm Weather: Sunny Max Speed: 12.3kts (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 8nm (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) I have now had 2 wind fails chasing 10kts for foiling. Today was light so kitted up for a long bike ride, when a whats app message said wind at Bradders venue around 4pm, so ditched the bike and hooked up the trailer. The place was blazing sun, with families and picnics lots of sailors and families. Those on the water were planing or flying on big kit and measured 12kts, so game on. Loaded the Slingshot 84 Front wing + larger 48 rear wing in "C" position, which pushes the wing forward for maximum lift in the dodgy wind to a 8.5 Goya rotational sail and the Exocet RF91 board. Took too long setting up because I could feel the wind dropping. A quick reading showed 8kts but thought the wind would return. Sailed off nice from the beach pumping and it was very close to lift. So near yet miles away. The river has quite a swell in the middle so started pumping downwind off the back of waves and stamping the back of the bd and incredibly, the 84 wing popped up for a small flight. Did it again but this time pumped all during the flight, which was longer but the poxy board just dropped down. By now the wind was dire, but it was a great sunny day. Had a chat with Dave and Nick, and the consensus was there was wind at the edges. Graham who had some flights decided to let his son ride and Colsey who never actually stop flying came in saying he can go faster by tweaking down haul. Thats taking the pith. Nick flew a lot but was pumping hard. Got back on the water and checked out the edges with Dave but whilst I did get going a bit more - it required long pumping off waves to fly and have to pump to stay up. Learnt a lot from the 84cm wing today. It does take off in very light wind with stomping the rear of the board, but I need more sail power. My 8.5 rotational sail dont cut it in 10 kts, as am heavy weight to maintain flight. Its def a pumping wing as it sits in a weird take off position down wave faces. I could probably have flew longer at Felixstowe by running down larger waves and pumping hard. As it is, unless I lose weight or get larger sails I need a constant 10/12 kts to maintain easy flight. Was hoping 8/10 kts. Colsey was using 10 metres and the others 9.5m, and all were struggling except Dave who is very light. DC had state of the art kit on display, really wide starboard front wing with a special long stiff fuse, allowing his front wing to go well forward, shimmed to the correct early lift angles and his 10M foil sail. It did look impressive at the 6-8kts I measured when he was out as he was flying all over the river! Good to see several out on the water, with loads of learners including kids. Framer put gates up next Tuesday he said. Re-thinking sail size just for Bradfield which is an easy flat water venue. Set my mast track in the middle for the first time and it was definitely the correct position for early lifting |
